Role: Assistant sound designer

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” marked my first time working as an assistant in a professional capacity. To assist my designer, Jane Shaw, I updated her cue sheet throughout rehearsals, edited recordings, tracked microphone placement, helped with organizational elements of Jane’s QLab file and communicated with the A1 to ensure that Jane’s vision was actualized.
While “Cat…” is not a text that I connected with initially, it was interesting to witness why it was special to the rest of the creative team and how they approached bringing to life a story set in a very painful era of American history. I enjoyed William’s exploration of queerness in the 1950’s deep South and the dichotomy of Big Daddy’s hateful and bigoted views as a Southern Planation owner and his seeming acceptance of queerness/otherness in the context of his son, Brick.
